What’s Happening Around CFP?

There is a lot happening around CFP these days!

This past weekend, Coach Quinn Otte competed in the 2013 Southeast Regionals. Dalton Ard, Mike Jones and  Josh Bostick traveled to West Palm Beach with Quinn for support and to be a part of the incredible competition. Quinn entered Regionals sitting in 48th position and finished strong in an astonishing 19th place! We are very fortunate to have a coach who is capable of competing at such a high level. What an inspiration to have around the gym!

Thank you to everyone who supported Quinn on this adventure! We would also like to give a big thank you to the McCue Family! Member, Chris McCue is from Lighthouse Point, Florida. He and his family drove to West Palm Beach to support Quinn and treated to whole gang to lunch. Thank you Chris and your awesome family!

Member, Lexxe Totin was on the media crew in West Palm Beach this past weekend to cover Regionals. Lexxe has been writing for CrossFit HQ the past few weeks covering athletes throughout the country and their success in the Open and Regionals. As many of you know, Lexxe will be continuing her marketing and media background with her new job this Fall in Nashville, Tennessee.

On another note, we are about to begin work on the outdoor side space of the gym. The plan is to fence off the dumpster area with a privacy fence and then fence off the additional space with metal fencing. The area will have a gate and lock to allow access to the grassy area behind the gym. We will also be adding an awning over the space. We will work hard to get everything completed in a time efficient manner but we will be working with the City of Auburn to get final approval so hang in there with us!

The plan with this space is to add additional space to the gym and provide an additional storage for equipment, etc. We will be using the outdoor area for WOD’s, for warm-ups, etc.

We will also be installing new signs and/or awnings with the new logo on the outside of the space. Please be patient with us if there are a few days where parking spaces are taken for that work to be done.

Again, thank you all for your patience with us and the ongoing work at the gym!

Coach Ian Morgan will be returning in the next week or so!

This past weekend, Michael DiChiara, Josh Bostick and Matt Laney competed in Pound for Pound in Montgomery. Matt Laney made it to the final round  which was only for the top 8 competitors. The final WOD that Matt made it in to was his 5th WOD of the day! He finished 6th out of 44 in the RX individual division. This was his first competition. Incredible!

Josh Bostick competed in the individual scaled division and finished 7th out of 34 competitors. This was also his first competition and he killed it!

Michael DiChiara competed in the Rx Team Division with friends from other gyms. His team finished 13th out of 31 teams!

These guys represented CFP well and it’s awesome to see so many members entering various competitions and representing the CrossFit community and our gym so well.

New CFP Whiteboard

Attn Members: Some of you may have noticed the “Whiteboard” button beside the WOD on the website. This new feature allows each of you to post what your results were for the WOD. Simply click on the “whiteboard” button where the WOD is listed and post your results. You will also be able to see what others times, scale options, reps, weight loads, etc. were.

You will also notice a new page at the top of the website titled “CFP WB”. This is where each of your “WOD logs” will be held for each athlete. There is also a search button that allows you to search various movements, WOD’s etc. for you to refer back to to compare times, weight loads, etc. This is a FREE option for you to log your workouts daily. When you go to the CFP WB page, you can click on your name and see a listing of all WOD results that you post.

So, with this said, 6 AM’ers…log your results from this mornings WOD and let’s get started!

Last weekend, Maggie McCollum and Michael Hutson completed the half-marathon in Auburn finishing on the 50 yard line at Jordan-Hare stadium. Michael, who has completed a few sprint triathlons, finished the race strong. With this race being the longest race completed by Maggie and Michael, they set a goal to complete the race with no walking or breaks. They did just that! They succesfully completed the race in 2hours and 30 minutes. Now they want to move on to a full marathon…any advice Brian Swann?

Maggie has been a member at CrossFit on the Plains since her 10th grade year at Auburn High School. She will graduate from Auburn High School in a few weeks and attend Auburn University this fall. Michael recently completed the 101 class at CFP and has started attending regular classes with Maggie. Michael just completed his first year of college at Southern Union and will also be attending Auburn University in the fall.

For those of you who are interested in critiquing your running skills, Big Dog Running will be hosting a running seminar for CFP this month. The seminar will be held at Big Dog Running (in Glenn Dean Shopping Center). We will be providing more details in the next few days!

Again, congrats Michael and Maggie!

“Consider the Alternative”

We all walk in to the gym at some point during the week, roll our eyes and complain about the WOD. “Why are you making us do this?” “Wait, what is the Rx and scaled weights?” Then, we all laugh it off and get it done. But what about those members and friends that see a WOD and really wonder if they can get through it? Have you ever looked at the person grunting through a WOD, sweat dripping down their face and wondered what their story is?

For those of you who have not met an amazing woman named Joan Weldon, this is her story:

In 2009, Joan Weldon went to her doctor for her yearly mammogram. When the test came back abnormal, Joan was diagnosed with Stage II Invasive Lobular Carcinoma (ILC) Breast Cancer. Invasive Lobular Carcinoma (ILC) Breast Cancer is a type of cancer that is a thickening of cells, so there are no tumors or lumps.  Joan’s breast cancer was confined to the left side. Joan had a big decision to make and  opted for a bilateral mastectomy. “This turned out to be a good decision. After my surgery it was discovered that the cancer was on both sides already.”

Joan and her son’s during chemo treatments

This led to a second surgery and in addition, 6 months of chemotherapy, then reconstructive surgery. “Most of us know someone who has gone through chemo and can relate when I say it kills everything. My side effects from the chemo and present medications are a challenge every day.”  Joan has a year and a half left of meds of the five-year treatment plan she must follow.  Some days, the meds cause her fingers to swell and can often create obstacles for her when trying to grip a bar or kettle bell. And this is not the only hurdle that Joan tackles when she attends CrossFit. Joan travels about 45 minutes from the lake to get to CFP and work out.

“My husband Vic, and all of our sons are all Crossfitters. Vic travels a lot for business and always finds a box to visit while he’s on the road. Believe me…he’s a serious CrossFitter!! He started at CFP after we bought a house on Lake Martin and tries to get a workout in on Saturdays. He’s a member of CrossFit Troy in Troy, OH. Our youngest son, Matthew, works out at Full Force Crossfit in Santa Clarita CA where he attends Cal Arts. Our oldest, Ben, is in Intel at Wright-Patterson AFB and is a member of Centerville CrossFit in Dayton, OH. Our middle son, Kyle, plays baseball for the Lake Erie Crushers and gets a workout in whenever he visits. Our daughter, Carli, is busy teaching and chasing our two beautiful granddaughters around in Tulsa OK, which is a workout in itself!!”

Her beautiful children

“This fall I’ll retire from the Air Force Reserves (Vic and I were both active duty AF for over 10 years each). I’m stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB and travel back and forth for my duty weekends. After 22 years it’s time to retire. I’m not physically able to keep up anymore which I hate. I am looking forward to being at the lake full time though.”

“I’d like to thank the CFP coaches for their patience with me. You are all so encouraging. It’s frustrating to ask for everything to be modified. Coming from a military background, I’m used to sucking it up and getting in line!”  It’s a privilege to work out with such a welcoming and encouraging group of individuals.”

“Everyday is such a blessing. My faith, family and friends have been amazing through all of this. Their love and support lifts me up and carries me. Whenever I get down about something like my hair being way too thin or I don’t feel good, I hear Vic in my head saying “consider the alternative”. His words help me laugh at the little things and be so very thankful for the big ones!!”

Joan and Vic living it up on Lake Martin

Joan is on the end of her journey and its amazing to see what she has been through. Joan is an inspiration to not just the females at any gym, she is an inspiration to us all.

Joan usually attends workouts on Saturdays with her husband Vic and various times throughout the week. They are planning a CFP lake day in June and want everyone to attend. We all can’t wait!

So proud to announce that Mack was chosen as Athlete of the Month!  Meet Mack!

“I first heard about CrossFit from my cousin who is a physical therapist.  I had tendonitis in my elbow and was told that they wanted to do surgery. I started CrossFit, and it fixed it!”

“I started CrossFit at CFP about 18 months ago. But about four months ago, I took a break after getting sidetracked with work and fell off the band wagon for 9 months.  I started back this past December.  NO more stops and starts again!”

“CrossFit has helped me get both physically stronger and mentally it just kind of sheds the stress of the day away.”

“Mack is awesome. He is very driven and has that special kinesthetic awareness to know when he is not doing something quite right…he isn’t satisfied until he rights his wrongs”-Quinn Otte

Philip Cala stated, “Mack is a great athlete to coach. He is always up for the challenge of the WOD.”

Mack bounces around from class to class but mostly attends the 6:00 p.m. class. Mack has two children, Lindsey and Harrison ages 22 and 20. They both attend Auburn University and Lindsey just completed the CFP university class.

Mack graduated from Auburn University in 1985 and is currently a branch manager/sales rep for a commercial construction supply company.

“I like to bird hunt and I love to fish.  My hobby is artistic blacksmith work. I did that for a living for 12 years and I am in the process of setting up a new shop in the auburn area, but just for fun, not for a living.”

Mack continues to work hard at CrossFit and does not make excuses!

Well, it official, Quinn will be heading to West Palm Beach, Florida to compete in the 2013 Southeast Regionals.

Quinn successfully made it to the Southeast Regionals last year holding strong in the 44th spot. Once there, Quinn finished 25th with an impressive performance. This year, Quinn will be sitting at 48th going in to regionals.

“I’m going in to this one in dead last place.” Quinn said when asked if he would be accepting the invitation.

As we are all aware, Quinn is not your typical CrossFitter…or ummm person….or ummm coach! Quinn has his own approach to fitness and being active. Quinn loves to carry his axe around, complete intense ruck runs and compete in “death races”. Yes, we said it “death races”.

This year, Quinn has had his sights set on one of the 2013 Death Races. “Held annually since 2005 in the small town of Pittsfield, VT, the Spartan Death Race gives up to 200 ultra-endurance athletes the chance to test their mental and physical prowess like no other event on earth.  On average only 15% of the competitors finish the event.  Remarkable when you consider the competitors are among the toughest and most seasoned endurance athletes on earth.  The hurdle and challenge-driven race requires competitors to complete a series of (15-20) grueling mental and physical challenges throughout a 40-mile course that runs through the Vermont woods.  During the Death Race, competitors may be asked to chop wood for 2-hours, carry a 20-lb stump around for hours, lift 10-30 lbs rocks for 5-hours; build a fire, cut a bushel of onions, crawl through mud under barbed wire, or after 20-hours of racing, memorize the names of the first 10 U.S. Presidents or a Bible verse, hike to the top of a mountain and recite them back in order. Unlike other endurance races that offer a detailed map, Death Racers have no idea what to expect next as the course map and list of challenges are kept secret.  This provides competitors with one of their biggest challenges as the length of the race can range from 24-48 hours. For an endurance athlete, not knowing where the light is at the end of the tunnel can be sheer torture.”

However, Quinn has been training hard for Regionals in an effort to make it again this year, and he did it.

Dalton will be traveling to West Palm Beach with Quinn this year and giving Quinn daily massages…wait…what? No but really, he will be there with Quinn  to support one of his coaches who has turned into a great friend.

“I  said that if anyone made it to Regionals, I would be there!” Dalton stated when asked about Quinn qualifying.

“As an athlete he strives to better himself. He attacks his weaknesses and his willingness to learn, experiment and allow himself exposure to difference challenges has helped him become stronger. As a coach he turns these outward and projects them into the athletes he is coaching. This instills confidence and hunger to excel in junior/beginners and amplifies similar traits in more advanced or experienced lifters. He is my friend, selfless and a person worth going the extra mile for.”-Ian Morgan (from Selection in Northern Virginia)

We will be keeping everyone posted via website, Twitter and Facebook with Quinn’s progress at Regionals. The Southeast Regionals will take place May 17-19. We have had a lot of people ask to send snacks, food, etc. and we will set up something for that if you would like to send something with Quinn. They guys will leave early the week of May 17th and be driving to West Palm Beach. We wish you safe travels and best of luck to Quinn! CFP loves you!
